Shreepad Joglekar

Art, Kansas State University
Manhattan, KS

Shreepad Joglekar received his BFA from Sir J.J. institute of Applied Art in Mumbai, India, and his MFA from Texas Tech University in Lubbock, Texas. He is an Assistant Professor of Photography at Kansas State University, Manhattan KS. His work has been shown in several galleries in the US, Canada, China, Germany, and United Kingdom. Exploring natural, cultural, and intellectual environments has been a dominant theme in his work.

My project in Paducah involves surveying and documenting the
architecture of the artist studios and galleries in the lower town
arts district. This includes taking high resolution images of the
exteriors of the buildings, and taking measurements of the interior
spaces – especially spaces which function as studios and/or galleries.

This phenomenon (artist revitalizing historic homes and neighborhoods)
is very unique and my project explores the individual stories of the
artist which make this possible. I plan to pair the photographs of the
artist’s spaces with some factual information about the functions the
spaces perform.

Jui Mhatre

Jui Mhatre\’s Performance at the Yeiser Art Center

Jui Mhatre has been practicing classical Indian dance “Bharatanatyam” for past fifteen years, and teaching classical as well as folk dances for ten years. She has also appeared in several solo performances in United States and Canada. She currently lives and teaches dance in Manhattan, Kansas. Apart from practicing classical Indian dance, she also works as an interdisciplinary artist mixing performance with other media such as clay and video.

With my project in Paducah, I intend to mix two art forms- Dance and Clay – which involves a dance performance (barefoot) on a slab of wet clay. I am interested in making a part of this into a community art project where I will teach steps of classical Indian dance to interested people from the Paducah community and they would perform on a slab of clay. After the performance, the slab will be cut into tiles, fired and then installed on an outdoor space/wall in the lower town district.

I’ll ask the artists in the community to keep a written record of their dreams for at least a month, too. Then I’ll lead a group session at which we’ll each paint a painting inspired by one of our dreams. Painting from an imagined scene will require the artist to synthesize composition, color and value. I will use watercolor and encourage the participants to do the same, but they may use whatever medium they choose. I’ll install the resulting work at AIR Studio for the neighborhood and visitors to enjoy.

I’ll also lead a workshop on portrait painting, touching on the reasons why portraits are so important. Continuing with the dream theme, I’ll encourage participants to do an imaginative self-portrait using photographs and mirrors for reference. This will be an all-day workshop at which participants will provide their own materials. The results will be installed at AIR Studio.

In addition to showing his work nationally and internationally, selected images have also been published in seven major publication including, Screen-print Basics and Image Transfer on Clay.

Artist Statement:
Since my experience in Paducah, my works are associated with the evolution and education of pharmaceutical drug use. I am looking at the atrophy associated with motivational effects of drug use and its correlation with the stereotypes of the Lazy American and the degenerative effects on memory. Additional research is in the effect pharmaceuticals have on our notions of acceptability and normality and how this defines a quantifiable cross section of our society.

Marie Weichman was born in Wyoming and raised in Texas. Since earning an MFA from Texas Tech University, she has been included in numerous group exhibitions throughout the United States as well as international exhibits in China and Peru. Weichman spent the summer of 2007 in Jingdezhen, China as a resident at the Pottery Workshop and Experimental Sculpture Factory and was included among Ceramic Monthly’s 2008 Emerging Artists. She is currently on faculty in the Art Department at Olympic College in Bremerton, WA.

During her stay in Paducah, she plans to work with flexible casting materials such as rubber silicones that are cast with an embossed surface in sections. Each section will be part of a larger mixed media construction that includes stitching, adhesives, and other materials. The fabric will be constructed in a way that can be hung from the ceiling creating an intimate space through which visitors can walk, such as a long hallway. Lighting from the outside rather than the inside of the space will be important. She plans to have a completed installation for the end of her stay that can be exhibited before she leaves.

She has a very strong background in non profit community arts management and is committed to the mission of these types of organizations. A community with a thriving arts scene is a vibrant healthy community. As an artist and as an arts administrator, she finds it paramount to share, facilitate and engage. This residency is of particular interest to her, primary because of Paducah’s success with using the arts as an economic stimulus. She feels that getting the opportunity to spend time among the people who helped with that transition would be an honor.

Niki works primarily in 2D with watercolor and graphite, generating realistic portraits, then constructing a sort of surrealist dreamscape around them to give the viewer some semblance of who the character in the piece might be. Recently, she has developed sketches for a series of 2D works that push 2D boundaries and are significantly more tactile than pervious pieces. These works will be her focus during her time in Paducah.

Her ideas for working with the community while in Paducah include:

Introductory Artist Talk: An opportunity for the public to see what she has done previously as a refrence point for the work that will be created during her residency

Exhibition of Final Works: An opportunity to share with the public works created during the residency

Community Make Day: Niki has always wanted to invite the public in to help with her work or help her generate a large number of one object, in this case, paper cranes, which would serve as an installation to supliment the 5 drawings.

Collage Workshop: Instruct a collage workshop focusing on transforming materials into a work of art.

Working with Local Artists: Working with other local artists who are outside her own discipline to collaborate on certain elements of said five works

Rick Miller is a documentary filmmaker from Toronto, Canada.

During his residency he will be editing his documentary, The Joy in Rage. This film is a collaboration with Raging Asian Women, a unique taiko drumming group based in Toronto. They are one of several groups in North America who are adapting an ancient Japanese musical tradition for modern audiences. You can read more about their philosophy on their website.

His filmmaking approach is based on a collaborative model where the subjects of the film share creative input with the documentary director. Is this way, the musicians have control over how they are represented on screen and are, in turn, able to explore what is for them a new medium for artistic expression.

The Joy in Rage represents Rick’s thesis project for a Master of Fine Arts in Documentary Media. Upon completion of the project he will be entering the documentary into the festival circuit and will be searching for a broadcaster as well. The documentary will include an appropriate credit for the Paducah Arts Alliance.

While in Paducah, Rick will conduct a workshop on using video to document creative work. Through multiple hands-on sessions, individual artists will learn how to use whatever video and computer equipment they have on hand to make a short video demonstrating their artistic process and/or promoting their work that they in turn can utilize for promotional purposes or to support a grant application.
